About

A little about Selvedge Edge

Selvedge Edge Upholstery is based in Edinburgh and run by Rebecca, a trained upholsterer with a background in furniture restoration and woodwork – skills that shape her thoughtful, hands-on approach to every project.

Rebecca first discovered upholstery while working at a canvasworks in Brighton, making boat covers and repairing sails. That led to small-scale upholstery for yacht interiors, where she found a real passion for the work. After returning to Edinburgh, she gained further experience as a machinist making soft furnishings before studying Furniture Restoration, which built a strong foundation in upholstery techniques, structural repair, and woodwork. She then worked for an Edinburgh-based company, creating modern upholstery and honing her skills in contemporary furniture.

She later co-founded a furniture-making business that combined upholstery and joinery, whilst also teaching woodworking classes. This broad experience continues to guide her approach today, especially in frame repairs, restorations, and attention to detail.

Rebecca established Selvedge Edge Upholstery in Leith, creating a studio dedicated to restoring and reimagining furniture with care, quality materials, and an appreciation for good design. She has also been recognized with the Bob Fowlds Grant from the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF), which supports emerging upholsterers with funding and mentorship.

Working together to get it right

Restoring a well-used piece or creating something brand new both start with the same process – we work with you to choose fabrics, fillings, and finishes that suit your home and your budget. Wherever possible, we use natural and sustainable materials to ensure each piece not only looks right but feels right and stands the test of time.

Every project at Selvedge Edge is a collaboration. Some clients arrive with a clear idea, others need help shaping one but either way, we guide the process with care and clarity so the finished piece reflects your vision and values.
